Below is a very brief summary of a breakdown of the research study. A full breakdown will be made available after the completion of the study in late March 2024, exact date TBD. Until then enjoy reading about the study's progress thus far.

Context

Active Shooter Incidents:

Active shooter incidents refer to situations in which an individual or individuals actively engage in a shooting spree, often in a public setting. These incidents can occur in various locations, but they have gained significant attention, especially in schools and educational institutions. The increasing frequency of active shooter incidents has sparked widespread concern and anxiety. These events are often unpredictable and can lead to tragic consequences, including loss of life and serious injuries.Active shooter incidents create an urgent need for comprehensive and effective strategies to mitigate the risks and protect individuals in vulnerable settings like schools. This need has become a top priority for educational institutions and the communities they serve.

The Growing Need for Effective Preparation and Training:

Given the unpredictable nature of active shooter incidents, there is a growing recognition that preparation and training are essential components of response and survival.Educational institutions, along with law enforcement agencies and emergency responders, are increasingly focusing on the development of effective training programs to prepare students, teachers, and staff for the possibility of an active shooter event.Effective training goes beyond theoretical knowledge and includes practical, scenario-based exercises that simulate real-life situations. Such training not only imparts critical skills but also boosts individuals' confidence in their ability to respond effectively during an emergency.

Role of Virtual Reality (VR) Simulations:

Virtual reality simulations represent a promising solution for addressing the need for safe and controlled training environments. These simulations use immersive technology to create highly realistic and interactive scenarios.VR simulations offer a controlled and secure space in which individuals can practice responding to active shooter incidents. These simulations can mimic the stress and urgency of real-life situations, allowing participants to make decisions and take actions as if they were in an actual emergency. The advantage of VR is that it provides a risk-free training environment where individuals can learn and improve their decision-making, response strategies, and situational awareness. VR also allows for repeatable and customizable training scenarios tailored to specific needs and skill levels.Furthermore, VR can provide valuable insights into participants' psychological and physiological responses during training, enabling researchers to assess the effectiveness of different training modalities.

Problem

Lack of research on the effectiveness of VR training for active shooter scenarios among students.

Hypothesis

VR simulations will be as effective, if not more effective, than in-person training in enhancing psychological preparedness and confidence to survive active shooter incidents.

Proposed Experiment

Participants are randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving in-person training followed by VR simulations, and the other receiving VR simulations followed by in-person training.

Data collection methods include questionnaires, heart rate monitoring, Sense of Presence Questionnaires, pre- and post-training assessments, scenario-based decision analysis, and a debrief session with specialized professionals.

Ethical considerations include participant well-being, emotional support, and the design of simulations to mitigate psychological risks.

Research & Analysis

Research:

The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of VR simulations compared to in-person training for active shooter preparedness.Data analysis will involve statistical models, including logistic regression and structural equation modeling.

Analysis:

The analysis will focus on comparing the effectiveness of VR simulations and in-person training in enhancing psychological preparedness and confidence.Key data points include changes in participant confidence, knowledge, emotional responses, physiological indicators, decision-making, and feedback from the debrief session.
